Thyatira: The Corrupt Church

Thyatira: The Corrupt Church

May 23, 2021

Passage: Revelation 2:18-29

Preacher: Bishop Jayson Quiñones

Series: Revelation

Summary:

Thyatira is first mentioned in the book of Acts (16:14), the home city of Lydia. A seller of purple (a dye the city was known for), who was in Philippi at a prayer meeting the Apostle Paul was preaching at, she and her family were saved, and baptized. He and Silas stood in Philippi and were imprisoned, which resulted in the Philippian Jailer and family being saved and baptized. It is probable this church was birthed during this missionary journey. Situated some forty miles south-east of Pergamum, a Lydian city on the edge of Mysia, under Rome since B.C. 190, a centre of trade, especially for the royal purple. Shown by inscriptions to be full of trade guilds, Apollo the chief deity with no emperor-worship, center of activity by the Nicolaitans with their idolatry and licentiousness under a “prophetess” who defied the church there.

Sermon Points

  1. Progress is not a replacement for purity: (vv.18-19)
  2. False prophets, or false teachers, will lead people into God’s judgment: (vv.20-23)
  3. Amidst corruption purity and perseverance are expected: (vv.24-29)

Wherever corruption is found, authority, influence, and impact are diminished
