    Passage: Mark 8:27-9:1

    Preacher: Bishop Jayson Quiñones

    Series: Jesus Impact

    Summary:

If we are going to have a lasting impact upon our culture we must consider the real cost of being a disciple of Jesus! We must recognize the fact that revelation from God, about God, will either cause a radical change and devotion to Him or a clear rejection of Him and His will. As disciples we must strive after greater revelation of God and deeper devotion to God!

    Detail:

    • In this age of relativism there are many “opinions” surrounding God. Sadly, even within the visible church there are many differing opinions of who Jesus is!

    • Our understanding of who Jesus is has the greatest impact upon our lives…we can mentally acknowledge certain facts about Jesus yet that does not ensure we really believe them. When we really believe the facts laid out in the scriptures about Jesus it changes our lives entirely!

    • We must recognize the fact that revelation from God, about God, will either cause a radical change and devotion to Him or a clear rejection of Him and His will…as disciples we must strive after greater revelation of God and deeper devotion to God!!!

“Discipleship that cost us is the only discipleship that makes a lasting impact…”

    1. Our confession of Christ will cost us: (27-33)

    • If our confession of Jesus costs us nothing we must consider its genuineness. When we go with the crowd's opinion of Jesus it typically costs us nothing, yet we cannot wager our eternity upon popular opinions. One writer says it best, Elbert Hubbard defined public opinion as “the judgment of the incapable many, opposed to that of the discerning few.

    • To confess Jesus as Lord is a divine work in our hearts, yet we MUST, as the Apostle Peter says, “sanctify” the Lord in our hearts. There is a partnership in between divine work and personal devotion…it requires us to keep the revelation of God alive in our hearts through devotion!!

    • Our confession of Christ as the only way the Lord of our lives and source of all life will cost us. The question is what has your confession of Christ cost you!

    1. To follow Jesus will cost us our lives: (34-35)

    • Too many people “come to Jesus” not having counted the cost which results in shallow devotion with minimal to no fruit at all!
    • Jesus is not suggesting self-denial; He’s calling us into denial of self, everyday. Denying self is not the same as self-denial. We practice self-denial when, for a good purpose, we occasionally give up things or activities. But we deny self when we surrender ourselves to Christ and determine to obey His will!!

    • Just as we cannot accept the “crowd's” definition of who Jesus is, so we cannot offer God anything less than our lives. The question is are you living a life of denial of self or just self-denial some of the time?!

    1. Our loss in this world is eternal profit: (36-38)

    • Whenever we think of making an investment we must think about the return or “profit” of that investment. If we invest our lives in the pursuits of this world, it will result in the loss of our souls…hence the question: what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Yet if we will invest our lives in the pursuit of the King and His Gospel we will experience eternal life!

    • To be ashamed of Jesus is to not deny ourselves…one is the consequence of the other. We have a choice to make: deny self or be ashamed of Jesus, we can’t have it both ways!

    • We must recognize the high price to be a true disciple of Jesus and the true profit there is as the result of that decision. Above all we must ensure our motivation is the revelation of God and our devotion to Him not just His rules!

Have you counted the cost of following Jesus

and are you paying the price?
