Passage: Colossians 3:1-4

Preacher: Pastor Chad Reyes

Series: All About Jesus

Summary:

As we unpack Colossians 3:1-4, we must first realize that this letter is written by the Apostle Paul to the eklektos: the chosen or elect. This letter doesn't apply to everyone. Paul is specifically warning the "Church" of Colossae (the Colossians) of the heresy (false teaching) that is bringing them back into bondage under the regulations of man. Regulations that have no value in stopping the indulgences of the flesh. No victory over sin and death. He reminds them of their victory in Christ and their new life in Christ.

Detail:

We must be focused upon Christ to be of any real value to the culture

The church in Colossae struggled with false teachings that were pulling them away from dependence on Christ. The church has always battled with false teachings that draw Christians from dependence on Christ to dependence on self. What are some common battles in the modern day church that draw dependence from Christ and back to one's self? This list can go on and on, but these are some that jump out immediately.

  • “Your interpretation is yours and my interpretation is mine” (Truth can be anything)
  • “I have the right to. It’s my life” (Entitlement)
  • “It seems right. Feels right. Others think it’s right. Who are we to judge” (Governing from anything but scripture - Standards/Canon)

Memory Verse: Colossians 1:15-18 NKJV

15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
